What a GSP Was Bred to Do

Why It Matters

A GSP is a versatile gundog — bred to do more than one job. Depending on the line and the training behind it, the same dog may be asked to search for game, locate it, point it, track wounded game, and retrieve on both land and water, working cooperatively with a handler throughout.

Understanding this is what stops owners from misreading normal breed behaviour as a problem. A GSP that freezes on a scent, or wants to carry things in its mouth, or works ahead of you scanning the ground, isn't misbehaving — it's doing exactly what generations of selective breeding built it to do.

How To Do It

1. Recognise the core behaviours early: scenting and searching, pointing (freezing on game scent), tracking, and a strong instinct to pick up and carry.
2. Give the instinct a legitimate outlet before it finds its own — structured retrieve games, veld walks with freedom to search, and eventually formal field work.
3. Don't try to train the drive out of the dog. Training exists to shape when and how the dog uses its instincts, not to suppress them.
4. If field work isn't your goal, still respect the instinct — daily mental and physical outlets that use scenting, searching and retrieving keep a non-hunting GSP satisfied and easier to live with.

Common Mistakes

• Treating pointing, scenting or retrieving behaviour as disobedience.
• Trying to suppress prey drive entirely instead of channelling it into structured activity.
• Assuming a 'pet line' GSP has no working instinct — most retain it to some degree.
• Skipping any field or scent-based enrichment because hunting isn't the household's goal.

Once you can name the four core behaviours (search, point, track, retrieve) and see them in your own dog's daily habits, you're ready for Your First 7 Days and building first commands from a foundation of understanding, not correction.
